Any prepared food (eating out, or frozen, canned soup etc) tend to be high on sugar, fats, and salts because (due to their place in our basic biological needs) they make our mouths happy.

When things sit (for example, packaged) they tend to lose nutrients and also flavor. Another aspect in this is the rigors of preserving food across long hauls from manufacturing plants or distant farms to you. Also, as is the case in orange juice, they may strip out the tasties to make the substance less volatile for long-term storage to hedge against bad crops or other inconsistencies. Additionally, salt is in eeeeeverything as it helps to preserve.

If you made your own cake, crackers & pizza it would be less of a problem to have them for breakfast, lunch & dinner b/c you could control what went into them. .. and save a fair bit of money on pizza delivery. Just a thought.

Your tattoos look like wood-cuts in children's books! I appreciate their wrist-ical symmetry along the vertical axis. Was the wrist a painful place to put something like that? I have, at times, (idly) pondered putting something small on my left wrist or the inside of my left forearm. Specifically the left side. However, I have not come across anything that I'd want put on me permanently. But the wrist seems wise (for me) as it seems to be at low risk of warping with changes to skin elasticity and other body form factors.

Tracy had spoken of wanting some Latin on her wrist to the effect of "I will not bend," which seemed (silently) silly to me, as she did not seem anti-authoritarian. So, I would also be worried that my awesome thing might seem silly to others who didn't understand what it meant to me (as any tattoo I would get would necessarily be overwrought with meaning and internally intricate nuance because I am an ass like that). That said, do these little birds contain Andrle-metaphors? What do they mean, if they do? Elsewise, they are very cute. And definitely woodcuts, or maybe the bird from the Disney movie version of Snow White.

I thought if you did this, but instead of different people with the same prompt, come up with a storyline and then have each response be from the same person to the same recipient, but with slight alterations to the storyline, and see what different approaches that brings out (like alternate realities with the same underlying premise, but slightly different small things each time) Also, PICTURES.

It would be an interesting notion. I'm not enough in the know to name names, but aren't there directors who do this sort of adventurous thing?

I know I'd miss the "recite that actor's filmography" game. My sis and I have been watching loads of Korean and Japanese films the last year or so...and their film industries are so inbred they make Hollywood look as diverse as the setup you described. Just like you said, though: a lot of the actors are typecast, but some get to do solidly different characters so well that if you didn't see them in multiple roles you wouldn't realize what a good actor they are.

This may be too heartless for Andrle-cita, but how about the traditional headphones defense?

It's not like you have to actually listen to anything. (After all, you'd have to jack the noise up to ridiculous levels to hear anything over street traffic anyway.)

Even when I'm at work and I know I'm supposed to toddle up to people no matter what, I hesitate if they're on a cell phone or wearing headphones.

Pfft, women get bored so easily. That can be taken in numerous ways though (far be it for me to want to defend the popped-collared, spray-on-tan axe demographic). "Women are capricious," seems to be the reading that you mentioned in your tweet (I am commenting here since this is where I saw it and plus I cannot comment on twitter.) The ad could also be saying that the viewer is not interesting enough for women, and thus must provide external stimulus.

Thanks Talitha! I think I'd be in a lot of trouble if I tried to cut out corn and rice too - although I think it's definitely something to work toward! I wonder as I'm eating those if they aren't just as bad as the flour!

Rob, yar, just the sugars that are added to things unnecessarily. The idea is that fruits and veggies with sugars are OK because they're naturally-occurring. But stuff that comes with extra sugar squeezed into it for silly reasons is straight out.

Clearly, you and I are just too nice of people to just tell them off and leave. For phone solicitations (from college, etc) I've just been very polite but blunt: "I do not wish to make a contribution at this time." If they push it, I just repeat it. If they push it AGAIN (which the college peeps will try to offer lower donation amounts) I say no again and tell them I'm going to terminate the call. Polite but blunt to save me (and them, frankly) time.

Good luck with the dietary adventure! I eat in a similar fashion, except I'm a bit more strict (no corn or rice either, alas), and it's done wonders for me. I've also increased my whole veggie and fruit quotient quite a bit.

Check out Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes if you are interested in more of the science behind it. A really great book.

two things. 1: this was not typed and then scanned and uploaded (you could have at least used Times New Roman :p ). 2: I remember hearing someplace once that training for cats and dogs (in a showbiz sense), is largely the same. They do the "trick," and you have this spoon that has a clicker that you do so there is an auditory cue and then you give the food. With the dogs, after a while you can stop giving the food and just make the click. With cats, they will stop doing the trick if they learn the treat has stopped coming.

I wondered if someone previously had to help her find her way to the counter (surely seeing eye dogs can get you places and keep you from being run over in traffic, but they can't interpret the purpose of your entering a building (i.e. take you to the counter to order), or can they?).

Your friendly neighborhood behaviorist here! And actually, it is amazing what you can teach any animal with the correct motivators! Just a guess, but I think is highly likely that seeing eye dogs are trained to recognize where cash registers are. Their boxy appearance is fairly universal (especially when you have the color blindness of a dog). It would probably be a convenient starting place for most stores. After all, most other shopping experiences probably require some level of assistance when you're blind ("Dammit, Lassie! Bad dog! I said shoes, shoes! Not 'shorts'").

With that said, my dog can tell the difference between my outside shoes and slippers! He thinks I'm trying to trick him whenever I'm tired and forget to change them before taking him outside. (It's sad he's often more wake then I am)
